Opening Information 2010-2011

Expository Composition is a required course in twelfth grade with prerequisite required courses American Literature and Contemporary Composition. According to the Secondary Literary Branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District, "the major purpose of this semester course is to provide experiences in writing that are characterized by logical and coherent organization, clarity of expression, and suitability in style, usage, and the conventions of writing." Further, students will read expository and informational genres such as essays, biographies, critiques, precis, and newspaper and magazine articles to determine literal and implied meaning and to demonstrate through classroom discussion, oral presentation, and written expression an understanding of the text(s). The course also features the essential skills of editing.

The Senior Project, featuring a research paper, a letter of intent, a physical project and an oral presentation are required during this semester.

Work in Adventures in English Literature continues with selections from the King James Version of the Bible and poetry selections from John Donne.

Literary terms are reviewed in class with a test scheduled for Friday, before the weekly class discussion.

The outside reading assignment on Achebe's Things Fall Apart requires students to produce twenty five talking points (five for each chapter) for Chapters Twenty to Twenty-Five. An essay for the novel is scheduled either as classwork or homework.

The screening of Beowulf is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week. Students will revisit the excerpt and analysis from the anthology in preparation for the film.

In-class assignments from Adventures in English Literature anthology continue in class this week, including Growth of the English Language selections, selected works of British poets, and prose selections from the Elizabethan and Victorian literary periods.

Literary terms eleven-twenty are tested in class Monday; a new set of terms will be reviewed this week in class and a new quiz scheduled.

Outside reading assignment on Achebe's Things Fall Apart continues with talking points due for Chapters Sixteen-Twenty and class discussion on Friday.
